Assistive Technology (AT)

Sensory Overload Disorder

and

Noise Cancelling Headphones

Oh! How I wish I could redo my schooling with the help of Assisted Technolgy. I remember struggling to read a passage and hearing someone sharpen a pencil or move around in their chair. I would have to re-read the paragraph each time my train of thought was interrupted. It was frustrating as I put my fingers in my ears to try and block the noise. Now the noise-eliminating headphones could be used. They are easily purchased from Amazon and can be stored in the classroom or carried with the student. Trust me, when I tell you, students that suffer from sensory overload will willingly reach for AT to help them concentrate on the task at hand.

This simple technology is vital to students with sensory overload. Anyone can struggle with sensory overload, but students diagnosed with autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder ADHD, or other sensory processing disorders  (Click for a full list of sensory overload disorders) are not able to prioritize sensory information. Limiting the auditory intake in the room allows the student to concentrate on the task at hand. Studies have found that 5%-16% of school-aged children meet the criteria for sensory processing conditions. (Research into Brain Processing)  there are several indicators that students may be experiencing a Sensory overload disorder.
